Aanya woke up at six, before her alarm even rang, because she wasn't used to this much silence. No traffic. No neighbours shouting. Just birds outside her window and the soft sound of water somewhere far below.
She lay there for a minute, looking at the painted ceiling, and thought about last night. The dinner. Devika's strange comment about her father and gulab jamun. The way Mishti had just walked up and grabbed her hair like she'd known her for years. And Aarav's face when he saw it — like someone had punched him, but he was trying very hard not to show it.
